Stocks plunged on Wall Street after the government reported that hiring slowed sharply last month, the latest sign of weakness in the economy. The Standard Poor’s 500 index and the Nasdaq composite closed out their worst weeks of the year. The Dow Jones industrial average had its second-worst weekly decline.
The Dow Jones industrial average closed down 168.32 points, or 1.3 percent, at 13,038.27.
The Standard Poor’s 500 index fell 22.47 points, or 1.6 percent, to 1,369.10.
The Nasdaq composite average fell 67.96 points, or 2.3 percent, to 2,956.34.

The Dow is down 190.04 points, or 1.4 percent.
The SP 500 is down 34.36, or 2.4 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 112.86, or 3.7 percent.
For the year to date:
The Dow is up 820.71 points, or 6.7 percent.
The SP 500 is up 111.50, or 8.9 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 351.19, or 13.5 percent.
